Darjeeling Government College was founded on 5th August 1948. After 14 years of its establishment the Department of Zoology made a significant impact on the higher education scenario in the North Bengal. With the help of eminent academicians viz. the internationally renowned parasitologist Professor Biswapati Dasgupta and Mohitosh Banerjee, the Department was able to establish the Master's degree in Zoology under the University of Calcutta in 1962. This college is currently affiliated with the University of North Bengal, which was established considerably later. The M.Sc. courses in life science were established in the University of North Bengal in the year 1984. Thus, this department holds the stature of being a constituent Department and enjoys the status of academic autonomy, but undeclared.
The Department of Zoology offers both under and post graduate courses of Zoology. The undergraduate courses are completely under the academic curricula of the University of North Bengal but the academic curriculum of the M.Sc. in Zoology is independent with separate syllabi, academic calendar.
The B.Sc. at present has two different patterns CBCS pattern introduced in 2018 and the FYUGP pattern introduced in 2023.The M.Sc. as of 2022 follow the new updated CBCS pattern replacing the older CBCS pattern of 2017. For M.Sc. courses as many as are 29 DSE theory and 5 DSE practical elective papers are offered to the students.
