The Department of Political Science was started jointly with Economics in 1960.In 1969 Political Science Honours was started with 15 students and two teachers,Mr. Dipankar Basu and Mr. Dashruti Sengupta.Two more posts were created in 1970. In April 2001 Ms. Namrata Pariyar , joined the department and served as the Head of the department since 2007. In August 2001, Dr. Alina Pradhan joined the department.Later Dr. Ambika Thami joined the department in 2009 followed by Dr. Dipti Tamang in the year 2015. Dr. Dipti Tamang completed her Fulbright Scholarship Program from the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board and the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State in October 2022.In the year 2021 the departmental newsletter “MUNAL” was started by the students under the guidance of the Faculty members .The writings were posted and published in an online app Padlet. In 2022 the department newsletter “MUNAL” was published in the print form. The students received positive feedback and appreciation from other institutions where it was distributed.The students of the department also participates in The Youth Parliament Competition organised by the Department of Parliamentary Affairs, Government of West Bengal. The participation acquaints them with the legislative procedures.
In the end of March 2023, all the four faculty members were transferred to other different Government colleges.Three faculty members joined the department on 1st April 2023. The present faculty members are Smt Puja Gurung, Head of the Department,Shri John Kapil Chettri and Smt. Neelam Sampang.
The department is affiliated to the University of North Bengal.In terms of student strength, the department has the largest number of students.The department also has a Seminar Library with a good number of books which caters to the needs of both the students and the faculty members.The department holds the vision of nurturing responsible citizenship, encourages critical thinking, creativity and preparing students for the challenges and opportunities which they encounter in their lives.
